  • Referencing old work for new work. Speaking of which, a lot of you messaged me about my comment concerning reference, so I thought I should clarify. Growing up, I did use reference. I copied Jim Lee, Bill Watterson, and so many other artists to try to learn how to draw. I did it so much that I developed a dependency on the reference material. I had zero confidence drawing without it. So, I decided one day to do the opposite. Now I only use reference after I've tried (and usually failed) to draw my subject from memory. The other reason for this approach is that I think it is a major factor in helping me find some kind of style in my work. It's impossible to not be influenced by all the amazing art and artists in the world, so I would never take ownership of any one style. That said, I believe we all see the world a little differently, and the best way to show the world how we see something is to "reference" a memory, or do our best to draw what we see with our mind's eye.
